 Brisbane Writer's Festival

What an amazing experience it was to visit the Brisbane Writer’s Festival with 14 of our year 3 and year 4 students on Thursday! Hearing of Wia Chim’s cultural motivations that inspired her to write her books, along with Jackie French’s passion for history being intertwined through fiction, was a remarkably memorable opportunity for the students and teachers alike! I thank the students for representing St Rita’s with respect and pride, and Mrs Rossi who joined us for the day and purchased many of the author’s books for our library! Please see below for 2 accounts of the students’ experiences below.

‘On Thursday the book club people went on an excursion to the Brisbane Writer’s festival with Mrs Anderson and Mrs Rossi. There were lots of schools there! Wai Chim and Jackie French were the authors speaking to us. Wai Chim told us all about her writing and how she gets her ideas. She talked about her culture and her family and how they gave her good ideas for her books. Jackie French spoke to us about her books also. Afterwards we went to GOMA and made a mask out of paper. Both authors inspired me to become an author. I also learnt that you can turn non-fiction into fiction. This is known as ‘fibtion’ to Christa Bell (The author who visited St Rita’s during Book Week). This trip was the best trip ever!’   Alysha H, 3T.

‘Diary of a Wombat is Jackie French’s most popular book. Mothball the wombat has another adventure in Christmas Wombat Diary. Both books are an award winning duo. Wai Chim taught us about the story arc, character arc, history arc and real life arc. Next, Jackie French taught us about history and told us a crazy story’.
Lachlan, 3T.
